Warts are skin growths that develop due to infection with the human papillomavirus (HPV). These bumps are usually small, rough to the touch and can appear anywhere on the body, although they are most common on the hands, feet and face. Warts are harmless in most cases, but can be annoying or uncomfortable.
There are several types of warts, including common warts, plantar warts (on the sole of the foot), flat warts (generally smaller and smoother) and genital warts (found in the genital area and caused by specific strains of HPV).
Warts are spread through direct skin contact or through contaminated objects, such as towels or shared surfaces. They often go away on their own over time as the body’s immune system fights off the infection. However, some people choose to remove them for aesthetic reasons or to prevent their spread.
