Neurodermatitis, also known as atopic eczema or atopic dermatitis, is a chronic, inflammatory, non-contagious skin disease that occurs periodically.
The disease progresses in phases, and manifests with unbearable itching usually affecting the scalp, face and/or hands.
In Germany, about 15% of children and between 2% and 4% of adults suffer from this condition. Thus, neurodermatitis or eczema is the most common chronic skin disease.
Depending on the age, the condition manifests itself with different symptoms:
The skin of patients with neurodermatitis is more permeable than that of other people due to an altered skin barrier. alteration of the skin barrier. Here the skin loses more water and lacks important fats, so it dries out more easily.
The predisposition to this is innate: if family members such as parents or siblings suffer from neurodermatitis, the probability of contracting it is higher.
Following are some recommendations for skin care in patients with neurodermatitis or eczema:
At Hautarzt D. Uribe Holmgren we care about educating our patients.
We want them to know how to deal with the disease when it is severe and we have to "put out the fire".
It is very important to see and understand the severity of the disease in order to give the right therapy in time."
Treatments for neurodermatitis or eczema depend on the stage of the disease. They can range from care through ointment and/or light therapy to drug and injection therapies.
Some treatment alternatives:
Skin care is critical in patients with neurodermatitis, as these conditions can cause dryness, itching, redness and flaking of the skin.
External treatment for neurodermatitis or eczema neurodermatitis or eczema focuses on relieving symptoms and preventing the appearance of new lesions. Treatments may include:
– Emollients and moisturizersThese products help to keep the skin moisturized and prevent dryness, itching and flaking. Emollients should be applied several times a day, especially after bathing or showering.
– Topical medicationsWhen the skin is open, when there is acute pain and itching, we evaluate the use of corticosteroids to “put out the fire”. For maintenance treatment we act proactively with calcineurin inhibitors.
The
Phototherapy or
UVA/UVB cabin
is a medical device that uses ultraviolet radiation to treat skin conditions such as psoriasis, vitiligo, eczema and lichen planus, among others.
With the light therapyThe skin’s immune system is reduced. This reduces the growth of cells in the upper layer of the skin, which means that inflammatory changes of healthy skin. UVA light also has an anti-inflammatory and growth-inhibiting effect on deeper inflammatory cells.
Systemic therapy for the treatment of neurodermatitis or eczema neurodermatitis or eczema is generally used when topical treatments are not effective or are not sufficient to control symptoms. These treatments are supervised by Hautarzt D. Uribe Holmgren’s medical team.
Drugs commonly used in systemic therapy include biologic therapies and JAK inhibitors. These medications help to control inflammation and reduce the symptoms of neurodermatitis or eczema.
Neurodermatitis is a chronic disease that does not improve and must be treated for life. I always tell my patients to wash with warm water and then apply a moisturizer. Basically you have to get into a good daily routine to help control this disease."
