Neurodermatitis

Neurodermatitis, also known as atopic eczema or atopic dermatitis, is a chronic, inflammatory, non-contagious skin disease that occurs periodically.

The disease progresses in phases, and manifests with unbearable itching usually affecting the scalp, face and/or hands.

In Germany, about 15% of children and between 2% and 4% of adults suffer from this condition. Thus, neurodermatitis or eczema is the most common chronic skin disease.

Symptoms

Depending on the age, the condition manifests itself with different symptoms:

  • Intense skin itching.
  • Red, inflamed and scaly skin eruptions.
  • Dry and scaly skin.
  • Thickened or cracked skin.
  • Burning sensation or pain of the affected skin.
  • Skin irritation after contact with irritating substances such as detergents or chemicals.
  • Area of skin with blisters or scabs.
  • Skin color changes

Why does eczema occur?

The skin of patients with neurodermatitis is more permeable than that of other people due to an altered skin barrier. alteration of the skin barrier. Here the skin loses more water and lacks important fats, so it dries out more easily.

The predisposition to this is innate: if family members such as parents or siblings suffer from neurodermatitis, the probability of contracting it is higher.

Recommendations

  • Hydration Moisturizing is key to keeping skin soft and supple. It is recommended to use moisturizing creams or lotions, preferably unscented and alcohol-free, and apply them after bathing or showering to retain moisture in the skin.
  • Avoid irritating products: Irritants can worsen the skin and cause outbreaks of neurodermatitis. The use of products containing alcohol, perfumes, dyes or strong chemicals should be avoided, and mild cleaning products should be used.

  • Avoid scratching: Scratching can worsen the skin and lead to lesions and infections. Scratching should be avoided and nails should be kept short to avoid damaging the skin.

Treatment Options

Treatments for neurodermatitis or eczema depend on the stage of the disease. They can range from care through ointment and/or light therapy to drug and injection therapies.

Skin care is critical in patients with neurodermatitis, as these conditions can cause dryness, itching, redness and flaking of the skin.

Topical treatments
