The sun is a double-edged sword. On the one hand, it is tremendously energizing, as it provides vitamin to our body, but on the other hand it can be a tremendous threat.
Currently 1 in 5 people develop skin cancer caused by harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays and according to statistics, those affected are getting younger and younger. Early detection of skin cancer is essential for successful treatment. It is advisable to have regular preventive examinations and to examine the skin for any changes or new growths.
Here are some tests and techniques that can be used for early detection of skin cancer:
Perform a monthly skin self-examination to detect any changes in the appearance of existing spots, moles or bumps. If you see anything unusual, see your dermatologist.
A thorough skin examination by a dermatologist helps detect any signs of skin cancer. The entire body will be examined for any suspicious growths or lesions. This examination is performed from the scalp to the spaces between the feet. The dermatologist accompanied by a dermatoscope (special magnifying glass) looks for any abnormality in the whole body, regardless of whether the area was exposed to the sun or not.
If a suspicious lesion is detected during skin examination, a biopsy may be performed to obtain a tissue sample that is sent to a laboratory for analysis.
