Mucosal Diseases

The mucous membrane (mucosa) is a protective layer that lines the inside of hollow organs such as the nose, mouth and genitals. Mucous membranes are characterized by being kept moist by secretion. They protect us and prevent dangerous substances from entering our body by altering our immune system. If this membrane is “sick or weak”, bacteria and/or viruses can enter our body causing allergies, neurodermatitis or something that leaves us very susceptible to infections. Some common diseases are: Herpes, Aphthous, Periodontitis and Lichen Planus, among others.

Treatments

There are several treatments for mucosal diseases, and these depend on the type and cause of the disease. The following are some examples:

Anti-inflammatories

Se used to reduce inflammation and pain in the mucous membranes. They can be topical (applied directly to mucous membranes) or systemic (administered orally or by injection).

Systemic drugs

In severe cases, medications such as corticosteroids or immunosuppressants may be prescribed.

Topical application of creams or gele

There are several gels and creams containing active ingredients that reduce inflammation and pain, such as hyaluronic acid or salicylic acid.

Antibiotics

They are used to treat bacterial infections affecting the mucous membranes.

Antifungals

They are used to treat fungal infections affecting the mucous membranes such as oral or vaginal candidiasis.
