Venous Leg Ulcers

That is, the veins in the legs do not push the blood back to the heart as they should. Therefore, blood accumulates in the veins of the legs generating pressure. If left untreated, the pressure and fluid accumulation in the affected area can develop into an open sore.

Many people suffer from this disease. Between 4% and 5% of people over 80 years of age suffer from it. This is mainly because older people spend a lot of time sitting, so the calf muscle pump is rarely used and blood pools in the legs.

If a venous diagnosed with a venous ulcer in the leg, the underlying disease, chronic venous insufficiency, must be treated. The aim of the treatment is to improve the altered blood return.

There are other factors such as diabetes and smoking that favor the development of leg ulcers.

Treatments

Some treatments for venous leg ulcers may include:

  1. Compression is a key treatment for venous leg ulcers. It may include the use of compression stockings, bandages or intermittent pneumatic compression devices to help improve blood circulation in the legs.
  2. Wound care is important to help prevent infection and promote healing of venous ulcers. This may include the use of special wound dressings and proper wound cleaning.
  3. Debridement therapy. In some cases, it may be necessary to remove dead or damaged tissue from the ulcer to promote healing. This is known as debridement therapy and may include methods such as laser therapy or negative pressure therapy.
  4. Medical treatments. In some cases, physicians may prescribe medications to treat venous ulcers, such as medications to reduce inflammation or improve blood circulation.
  5. Lifestyle changes: making lifestyle changes, such as maintaining a healthy weight, avoiding prolonged sitting or standing and exercising regularly, can also help improve blood circulation and reduce the risk of venous leg ulcers.
